Interaural level differences describe how much louder a sound is at one ear compared with the other, a result of the head shadow attenuating sound waves as they travel to the far ear. This level difference becomes more pronounced for higher-frequency sounds, and it provides a powerful cue for locating sound sources on the horizontal plane—the brain infers the source side by noticing which ear hears a louder signal. In real listening, strong ILDs also support binaural processing in noisy environments, helping with speech understanding when the two ears receive different energy levels (binaural squelch). If ILDs are abnormal, it often points to asymmetrical hearing loss, because one ear’s energy is reduced relative to the other, altering the expected loudness difference across ears. By contrast, a time delay between ears would be an interaural time difference, differential spectral content comes from the ear’s shape and filtering, and averaging thresholds across ears does not reflect a lateralized cue.
